Cisterns hold water for usage at a later time.  There are many reasons why cisterns are used today.  Cisterns are used where the ready and abundant supply of water can not be guaranteed.  Areas where the water supply is provided by wells, can be augmented by cisterns to reduce excessive ware on the well pump and to reduce electrical costs.
